The D.A. Of The Day - Thursday, April 14th

THAT'S SMURFED UP.

A Tennessee man is feeling blue after being taken into custody for breaking into a high school and setting off a fire alarm -- in order to free the Smurfs he said were trapped inside the alarm box.

The unidentified 32-year-old suspect was wearing only socks and tighty-whities when he managed to sneak into the vocational building at William Blount High School in Maryville. He got in shortly after the opening bell, and wandered into the administration office, where he babbled incoherently and began playing with a dispenser of hand sanitizer, according to a secretary who called 911.

He managed to break into the alarm box before officers could arrive on the scene, then explained he was only doing it to save the cartoon characters whose lives depended on it. He's currently being held for psychiatric evaluation.

BITING OFF MORE THAN SHE COULD CHEW

A Canadian woman really put the bite into crime when she sank her teeth into her mother -- who had just saved her from drowning -- and a cop who came to the older woman's rescue.

Christianne Verbonac had passed out in her bathtub while stoned, and her mom dragged her out of the water -- but the 22-year-old didn't appreciate the effort, and cornered the older woman in her kitchen, biting her in several places. When cops arrived to calm Verbonac down, she spat and cursed at them, eventually gnawing on the hand of one officer.

Verbonac's lawyer blamed the incident on substance abuse, but Judge Steven Bilodeau sentenced her to 45 days in jail, commenting, "I get that you were on drugs, but you have to appreciate how insane what you did was. She saved your life and you thanked her by chewing on her and then the police arrived and you chewed on them, too"

FLORIDA MAN SHOULD RE-THINK THAT INK

A Florida man had no idea that one day his body ink would do him in, but that’s exactly what happened to Jonathan Hewett.

Seems the man has some rather unusual tattoos on his face, and when he was caught on camera burglarizing a home in West Palm Beach, they stood out. One that was especially prominent was the “Redrum” tattoo on his neck. For those who have watched “The Shining,” you will remember that redrum was a prominent part of that movie (it spells murder when written backwards).

Thankfully the man didn’t murder anyone, but he was charged with burglary, grand theft and possession of a weapon by a felon (he had been in prison on a robbery conviction and other weapons-related charges.)

The home owner also recognized Hewett because the two had met previously, and police were able to track him down through information in the Palm Beach County Jail’s tattoo database.
